Luuk Blom re-elected as Vice-President of the European Security and Defence Assembly
On Wednesday 2 December the Western European Union (WEU) assembly electedDutch MP Mr Luuk Blom (Socialist Party) as Vice President of the European Security and Defence Assembly. He is elected as Vice President of this Assembly since December 2008.
The European Security and Defence Assembly was known as the Parliamentarian Assembly of the Western European Union. Reflecting the increasing importance of security and defence questions and the need for effective interparliamentary scrutiny at a European level of intergovernmental decisions in this area, the Assembly revised its Charter and statutes in 2008. Parliamentarians from all 27 EU member states are now offered full rights in the plenary and committee structures of the Assembly which is now known as the European Security and Defence Assembly (ESDA). In recognition of the role played by non-EU European NATO members in support of EU operations, parliamentarians from Norway, Turkey and Iceland, and now also Croatia and Albania sit as associate members.
