Dutch House of Representatives receives Czech vice-premier read aloud (this opens a new window)

On Tuesday January 20, the standing committee for European Affairs will receive the Czech vice-premier for European Affairs Alexandr Vondra. The House wishes to discuss the priorities of the Czech chairmanship of the Council of the European Union.

Europe without barriers
On January 1 2009, the Czech Republic took over the EU-chairmanship from France. The country uses the phrase ‘Europe without barriers’as its motto for the chairmanship. The Czech Republic wants to break down the remaining barriers between countries as much as possible, twenty years after the Iron Curtain fell. It also wants to strengthen the four freedoms of the internal market: services, goods, capital and employees. The basics of this chairmanship are summed up in three E’s: Economy, Energy and External Relations.
