Interparliamentary Union (IPU)
The Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) is a global organisation promoting cooperation between national parliaments. The IPU was founded in 1889 and has since grown into a major organisation of 181 national parliaments. It aims to strengthen democracy and parliamentary procedures across the world, protect the rights of parliamentarians and promote international law and human rights. It provides a platform for parliamentarians to consult, exchange knowledge and experiences, and take joint action on peace, development and human rights.
Members of affiliated parliaments assemble twice a year. In addition to facilitating dialogue between parliaments, the IPU also plays an important role in supporting parliaments in emerging democracies and providing technical assistance.
Dutch delegation
The Netherlands delegates five members to an IPU Assembly. The composition of Dutch delegations to IPU sessions varies and is composed by the board of the association 'Dutch Group of the Inter-Parliamentary Union'. As of 1 January 2023, all members of the States General are automatically members of this association. The board of this association is made up of members from both the House of Representatives and the Senate, and is assisted by the committee clerk of Interparliamentary Relations.
