Ms Van Veldhoven MP to attend climate summit in New York

Ms Stientje van Veldhoven, member of the House of Representatives, will attend the United Nations Climate Summit in New York, on 23 September, as rapporteur on behalf of the standing committee on Infrastructure and the Environment. At the Climate Summit, United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon will urge the Member States to do more about climate change. He will also promote the UN climate negotiations.

The objective of rapporteur Van Veldhoven is to gain a clear picture of the current UN climate negotiations and of the expectations about possible outcomes of the climate talks in Paris, by the end of 2015. She takes a special interest in creating a financial tool within a new climate agreement. Economic motives for climate action are another topical issue. In the margin of the summit the rapporteur will speak with delegations from other countries and with CEOs of several companies.

Delegation

Ms Van Veldhoven is part of the Dutch delegation, under the leadership of Prime Minister Mark Rutte. The Dutch delegation also includes the members of the Cabinet Ms Wilma Mansveld, State Secretary of Infrastructure and the Environment, and Ms Sharon Dijksma, State Secretary of Economic Affairs.

European Council

On 23 and 24 October, at the European Council in Brussels, the European heads of state and government will discuss the European position in the climate negotiations. They will also establish the main goals of the European climate and energy package 2030.
