Government resigns, House to set its own agenda

Following the resignation of Prime Minister Dick Schoof and his cabinet on Tuesday 3 June, early elections have been scheduled for Wednesday 29 October. Until a new government takes office, the outgoing ministers will only handle ongoing matters, and the House of Representatives will set its own agenda. Any matters that the House does not wish to discuss will be declared controversial.

During the week of 16 June, the House of Representatives’ standing committees will decide which topics should be considered controversial until a new government is appointed.

Procedure

Additional procedural meetings will be held by the standing committees in order to compile a list of controversial issues. This will include legislation, as well as cabinet letters and policy documents. The House is expected to hold a plenary vote on the list during the week of 23 June.

Possible changes

The list of controversial issues may change. Committees and parties can propose that new topics be added, or that a topic be removed so that the House can discuss it.
