Thom van Campen elected President of the House

Mr Thom van Campen (VVD) has been elected President of the House of Representatives. In the third round of the election procedure, he obtained 79 out of the 148 votes validly cast. Mr Van Campen has been a Member of the House of Representatives since 2021.

The election of the President of the House took place on Tuesday 18 November and was decided in the third vote. There were three candidates: Mr Martin Bosma (PVV), Mr Thom van Campen (VVD) and Mr Tom van der Lee (Green Left-Labour Party). After the first and second rounds of voting, none of the candidates had reached the 75 votes required for a majority. Because Mr Van der Lee obtained the fewest votes in the second vote, he was excluded from the following round.

In the third vote, Mr Van Campen received 79 of the 148 votes cast, which was enough to secure the required majority. Mr Bosma received 69 votes.

"Let us get to work"

"I especially want to thank all Members of the House for the confidence placed in me,” the new President of the House said immediately after the election. "I feel the weight of that responsibility on my shoulders." He also thanked the other candidates, Mr Bosma and Mr Van der Lee. "The three of us promised all of you that we would keep sittings short and effective, so I will be brief. Let us get to work. The people in the country are counting on us."

The 2025 elections

Since 2002, the House of Representatives has elected its own President. The election takes place at the start of a new parliamentary term or when a vacancy arises. After the elections for the House of Representatives held on Wednesday 29 October 2025, Mr Thom van Campen was elected President on Tuesday 18 November.
