On Wednesday 10 January 2013 the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Ms Anouchka van Miltenburg, paid a visit to Brussels. The theme of the visit was mutual cooperation and the relationship between the national parliaments and the European Union.

Digital agenda
The Speaker met with Ms Neelie Kroes, Vice President of the European Commission and European Commissioner for the Digital Agenda. During an informal lunch the Speaker of the House and the Dutch European Commissioner, Kroes, exchanged ideas about current European dossiers, such as the digital agenda and the recent EC proposal on quota for women on supervisory boards of companies listed on stock exchanges. Recently, the House of Representatives lodged a subsidiarity objection to this proposal with the European Commission. The Dutch House of Representatives is of the opinion that this issue should be dealt with at national level and not at European level.

Methods
Subsequently, the Speaker met with her fellow-president of parliament, Mr Andre Flahaut, in the Belgian Federal Parliament. Among the subjects discussed were the various parliamentary working methods for dealing with European business. "Starting from understanding we can work up to cooperation", said the Speaker.
Subsequently, the Speaker had a talk with the President of the European Parliament, Mr Martin Schulz. Next, she met with Dutch MEPs.
