The OSCE Parliamentary Assembly is meeting in The Hague
This week, hundreds of parliamentarians from Europe, North America, and Central Asia will be gathering in The Hague for the Annual Session of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe Parliamentary Assembly (OSCE PA). The meeting is being organised by the Senate and the House of Representatives of the Netherlands and will be held from 4 to 8 July in the World Forum in The Hague.
How can international law and shared principles provide the foundations for shaping security and cooperation in an age of geopolitical tensions? This will be the key question during the Annual Session. The parliamentarians will be debating current crises, including the war in Ukraine, tensions in the Middle East, and the increasing pressures on democratic values.
Opening
The official opening on Saturday 4 July will be carried out by the Presidents of the Senate and House of Representatives, Mei Li Vos and Thom van Campen, and the Prime Minister, Rob Jetten, among others. The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Tom Berendsen, will address the Assembly on Monday 6 July.
International law institutions
As well as political leaders, representatives from international law institutions will also speak at the meeting. This includes Tomoko Akane, the President of the International Criminal Court, and Boštjan Škrlec, Eurojust Vice-President, who will open the plenary debate on Tuesday 7 July. The main theme of the debate will be the role of international law.
Declaration of The Hague
Feridun Sinirlioğlu, the OSCE Secretary General, will speak on the final day, Wednesday 8 July. This will be followed by the adoption of the Declaration of The Hague, in which parliamentarians will set down joint agreements on security, cooperation, and strengthening the rule of law.
Wide-ranging agenda
Parliamentarians will be working in committees on resolutions on such matters as the war in Ukraine and European security, arms control and hybrid threats, climate and raw materials, and the impact of technology, including AI and cybersecurity.
