What does this MP stand for?

Three questions for Nicole Maes.

1. What drives you to serve as an MP?

Freedom matters enormously to me, as does our collective responsibility to protect it. To me, the two go hand in hand. I believe the freedom of our way of life is currently under pressure. In times of global unrest, with autocratic leaders emerging across the globe, it is especially important to protect that freedom properly. I hope to play a part in that as an MP.

2. What would you change about the Netherlands?

I feel very strongly about ensuring that my child, and every other child, can live in a free society. That is why I want to remain steadfast in our support for Ukraine and wish to prevent any further Russian advances. I grew up in the 1970s, during the Cold War, so I know what it feels like to be afraid of the East.

3. Who inspires you, and why?

Frits Bolkestein. He was able to explain, in a highly eloquent way, what he saw as threats to a free society. I joined the VVD when he was parliamentary party leader.
