Biography

"Doing what matters"

Values are a very important part of my life and it worries me to see how little people are looking after each other. Individualism has taken hold of society, but you cannot be a society on your own. All too often, we seem to forget that we need each other.

Coincidence

The CDA is a good fit for me, but I have to admit that it was a coincidence that I ended up there. When I was young, I was very critical of how my local municipality, Gemert-Bakel, was run. The CDA was on the municipal council at the time, and they told me: if you think you can do better, try it yourself. They ended up putting me on the list at number seven. My father was a dyed-in-the-wool PvdA man, a true trade unionist. He was more left-wing than I am and believed in the power of campaigning, which prepared me for a political career from an early age.

Theatre

Politics nowadays has become nothing short of theatre: politicians put on an act and will say anything as long as it pleases the audience. Politicians should start focusing on the things that really matter, that is what the Dutch people deserve. Equality is a very important theme for me personally. My father had severe dyslexia, which – in the past – meant you were labelled stupid and were left to your own devices. As an MP, I am committed to equal opportunities for children and young people.
